AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a maritime system for tracking ships. The system is based on electronic radio messages exchanged between ships, which allow ships to be identified and their movement information to be transmitted to other ships. The information is transmitted at a higher frequency than normal marine VHF radio traffic, which requires a separate AIS antenna for maximum performance.
